The International Workgroup on Academic Liberty and Freedom of Research in Turkey(GITTurkey)

GITTurkey , which was established in the wake of the arrest of Prof. Büşra Ersanlı and which aims to fight pressures and restrictions academics and researchers face in Turkey, is organizing a symposium on judicial injustices experienced by academics and researchers.

The symposium entitled “Academy Behind Bars: Prejudicial Research, Criminal Subjects” will take place in Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts (Bomonti campus) on May 10, 2013 from 10:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and will discuss violations of rights and liberties in academy within the framework of enforcement of penal law.

The discussion will be further expanded by focusing on the works and acts of Pınar Selek, Müge Tuzcuoğlu, Dr. A. Kerim Gültekin and Prof. Büşra Ersanlı, who were arrested due to their works or political activities, imprisoned and/or taken hostage by the jurisdiction.

You are cordially invited to the symposium organized by GITTurkey in an attempt to promote freedom of thought and expression for not only the academic staff in universities but also for all members of the academy including students and independent researchers in Turkey, to prevent and track violations of liberties and to raise the public awareness in this matter.
